Digital transformation
“Digital transformation” is one of the most used and least understood terms. Separate three levels:
| Level | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Digitisation | Turning paper into digital files | Scanning paper invoices to PDF |
| Digitalisation | Using technology to improve an existing process | Approving invoices inside the ERP instead of signing by hand |
| Digital transformation | Changing how the company works, or its business model, through technology | Nakhla starts selling direct online instead of relying only on distributors |
E-government is the region's clearest example. Under Saudi Vision 2030, many services are now completed entirely from a phone through digital government platforms instead of office visits, which raised expectations of every service, private ones included.
Why do transformation initiatives fail? Because they're treated as purely technical projects. Transformation needs a clear business goal, executive support, changes to processes and roles (not just buying software), training, and measured results.
Watch outAlways ask: “if we put today's process on technology, is it actually better?” Automating a bad process gives you a faster bad process.
