Lesson 1 of 11

What is systems analysis and design?

Systems analysis and design is the structured way we understand a business problem, define what a system must do, and design the solution before developers write a line of code. It's the heart of MIS: where management meets technology.

Analysis answers “what must the system do?”, and design answers “how will it do it?”.

Every information system takes inputs, processes them, produces outputs and improves through feedback:

InputsStudent's orderPayment detailsProcessingPrepare the orderUpdate stockOutputsReceipt and notificationSales reportFeedback: student ratings
Case studyEvery lesson follows one example: a campus café ordering app. Today students queue for ages at break time, the café writes orders on paper, and the manager can't tell which product sells best. We need a system where students order and pay from their phones, baristas see orders in sequence, and the manager gets reports.
Watch outMany IT projects stumble not because of the code, but because the requirements weren't clear from the start. That's exactly the analyst's job.
