Lesson 7 of 10

Try Odoo yourself

Odoo is the easiest ERP to start with as a student: a simple interface, a free trial on its website, plus courses and an official certification. It's built with Python on PostgreSQL, so the skills you learn on MyMisPal apply directly.

CommunityFree and open source (LGPL licence), with the core apps; you host it yourself.
EnterprisePaid, with extra apps and features (such as full accounting and the Studio tool), official support and Odoo hosting.

Configuration versus customisation: the most important decision in any ERP project.

ConfigurationSetting the system up through its options, no code: taxes, currencies, invoice templates, approval flows, warehouses.
CustomisationWriting code or a new module that changes how the system behaves. Powerful, but it raises cost and makes future upgrades harder.
Watch outThe golden rule: change the process before you change the system. ERPs are built on best practices, and many “special requirements” turn out to be old habits. Customise only where it's a genuine competitive advantage.

Your first run: sign up for a free trial at odoo.com, install Sales, Inventory and Invoicing, then:

  1. Create a product “Sukkari dates 3 kg” of type Storable, with a sales price and cost.
  2. Update the on-hand quantity to 120.
  3. Create the customer “Al Waha Store” and a quotation for 10 cartons, then confirm it.
  4. Open the delivery from the sales order and validate it. Check stock: is it 110 now?
  5. Create and post the invoice, then register the payment. Watch the status turn to “Paid”.
Watch outOdoo offers free eLearning courses on its website and an official certification for each version. It's an excellent addition to an MIS graduate's CV.
