Lesson 7 of 9

Cloud costs and keeping them in check

The cloud's ease cuts both ways: anyone can start a server in a minute and forget it for months. That makes understanding pricing a sought-after skill:

On-demandPay by the hour or second, no commitment. Most flexible, most expensive.
Reserved / committedCommit for 1 or 3 years for a big discount. Ideal for always-on systems like an ERP.
Spot / preemptibleHuge discounts on spare capacity the provider can reclaim at any time. For jobs that can be retried.

Try estimating Nakhla's monthly bill. Prices here are illustrative for learning; real prices vary by provider, region and server type, so use the provider's official calculator for actual figures:

Pricing
Compute$219
Storage$12
Data transfer$18
Monthly estimate$248≈ 931 SAR · About 11,177 SAR a year

Illustrative prices: server $0.10/hour, storage $0.023/GB-month, transfer $0.09/GB. $1 = 3.75 SAR.

FinOps brings finance and IT together to control cloud spend: tags on every resource showing department and project, budget alerts, switching test environments off at night and weekends, and right-sizing instead of picking the biggest server.

Watch outWhen comparing cloud with on-premises, compare total cost of ownership (TCO): not just the server price but power, cooling, space, licences, staff salaries and the cost of downtime.
